Project Overview

The Mykonos Airport expansion transforms a constrained island airport into a modern gateway capable of handling the island’s extraordinary tourism demand. Our team delivered complete MEP engineering services, creating systems that perform reliably in extreme summer conditions while respecting the island’s architectural character.

Terminal Systems

HVAC & Comfort

The terminal HVAC design addresses unique challenges:

  • High-efficiency VRF systems for zoned comfort control
  • Dedicated outdoor air systems with energy recovery
  • Radiant cooling panels in departure lounges
  • Natural ventilation strategies for shoulder seasons
  • Air curtains at all entrance points

Electrical Distribution

  • New 20 kV substation with dual transformer feeds
  • 1.5 MW backup generation for full airport load
  • Comprehensive UPS for IT and security systems
  • Energy monitoring at distribution board level

Lighting Design

  • Circadian-responsive LED lighting throughout
  • Daylight harvesting in departures hall
  • Architectural accent lighting for design features
  • Airside apron floodlighting upgrade

Passenger Processing Systems

Baggage Handling

Modern hold baggage screening system featuring:

  • CT-based explosives detection (ECAC Standard 3)
  • Automated tray return system
  • Reclaim carousels with flight information displays
  • Oversized baggage handling provisions

Security Screening

  • Centralized security checkpoint with 6 lanes
  • Body scanners and automated tray retrieval
  • Security management system integration
  • Staff screening facilities

Airfield Systems

Ground Lighting

Complete airfield lighting upgrade including:

  • LED approach and runway lighting
  • Taxiway guidance signs and lights
  • Aircraft stand floodlighting
  • Visual docking guidance systems

Ground Support

  • 400 Hz ground power at all contact stands
  • Pre-conditioned air connections
  • Potable water and waste services
  • Electric GSE charging infrastructure

Sustainability Initiatives

The expansion incorporates significant environmental measures:

  • 400 kW rooftop solar PV installation
  • Solar thermal water heating
  • Rainwater harvesting for landscape and toilets
  • Electric vehicle charging for rental car fleet
  • Cool roof materials reducing heat island effect

Operational Excellence

The new terminal includes sophisticated operations support:

  • Airport operational database (AODB) integration
  • Flight information display system (FIDS)
  • Resource management system (RMS)
  • Building management system with mobile access

Challenges & Solutions

Seasonal Peak Demand

Summer peaks see 10x winter traffic, requiring flexible infrastructure.

Solution

Designed modular systems allowing seasonal activation and standby modes for energy efficiency.

Island Infrastructure Limitations

Limited utility capacity and logistics challenges for equipment delivery.

Solution

Maximized on-site generation and storage while pre-fabricating systems for rapid installation.

Iconic Architecture Integration

MEP systems needed to complement the distinctive Cycladic-inspired terminal design.

Solution

Developed concealed distribution strategies and custom architectural integration for all visible elements.
